Pamphlet design created for the article “How’Inside Out’ and It’s Sequel Changed Therapy” written by Selena Ryzik and published by the New York Times.

Background:

This article discusses how the ‘Inside Out’ movie and its sequel have been embraced by mental health professionals as a way of providing children with an easily recognizable and relatable visual language. These movies normalize complex emotions, such as anxiety, allowing for children to connect with and understand them.

Design:

This pamphlet design aims to conceptualize this idea of the ‘Inside Out’ movies being a fun, engaging, and recognizable tool. Colorful illustrations of the characters were used to imitate how they have been used as visual aids in therapy, and the pamphlet uses a playful and inviting display text typeface, Filmotype Mars, paired with a more toned-down body text typeface to give it both character and readability. The outside of this pamphlet is a greyscale design with recognizable imagery from the movie. The cover includes a silhouette of the main character, Riley, and a cut out showing basic concept designs of the emotions in her head. When you open the pamphlet, you are welcomed with bright colors and illustrations, replicating how the emotions unfold into their own world inside of Riley’s head. The back of this pamphlet displays the “In the Making” section accompanied by an illustration of the control panel the emotions use inside of Riley’s, using recognizable imagery from the movie as a playful way to reference the creators of the film. The curved cutout along the top of this pamphlet not only creates a dynamic layout when opened, but also mimics the circular shapes seen throughout the design that represent the memory orbs from the movies. All of the imagery seen in this pamphlet was done manually through Adobe Illustrator based off of references from the movies.
